Pycnogenol, the French pine bark extract has demonstrated more effectivity in a new study against conventional drug in reducing the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
CVI is caused by leg veins' inability to pump blood back to the heart which can lead to the legs and ankles becoming swollen (edema) since the valves are unable to contain the excess blood, which seeps into the tissue.
If left untreated, this condition can lead to varicose veins, spider veins, pain during walking, and the life threatening condition deep vein thrombosis.
In previous studies, Pycnogenol supplements boost blood circulation, among other benefits.
“Pycnogenol has demonstrated its efficacy and safety in several clinical trials and symptoms of CVI have been reduced significantly by Pycnogenol in controlled studies.
We were pleased to see that not only did Pycnogenol decrease CVI symptoms, but the results were significantly more successful then the prescription drug used for treating CVI,” said Rohdewald.
This new study led by Peter Rohdewald, PhD was conducted by researchers at L'Aquila University (Italy), and published in the journal Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hematosis (2006 Apr;12(2):205-12).
